SSC - Application process

Teams/Participants have to comply to the conditions stated on SSC - Conditions and Rules.

Teams/Participants application

Both teams and single persons are encouraged to apply to the competition. Information about how to apply can be found in the according subsections.

Teams

Teams are expected to be formed before applying to the contest. It is not relevant whether the formation takes place in an academic context, e.g. scientific departments, completely independent/self-motivated or under patronage of sponsors, e.g. hardware/software vendors or scientific institutes outside the campus. The size of the teams is not officially limited, but may not exceed 6 members, and additionally up to two team leaders for coordination. Larger teams will become difficult to be managed beyond this number.

The application should contain:

• Group name
• Group leader(s) - these are the main contacts
• Team organization - describe how you are organized. It is up to you to form any meaningful organization, we just want to understand it
• Associated Organization(s) (University/Department, Sponsor, none)
• Information about the members:
  • preliminary work/experience of the members in relation to the topic e.g.
    • Storage
    • Unix system
    • Administration of systems
    • Performance engineering
    • Operating System engineering
• Strategy plan - what storage software will likely be used, how to evaluate the system (should not exceed 1 page)
• Available - outline for the exclusive system access, which month/periods would you prioritize for system access

Single participants

Single participants have to fill out the same document as the teams. As single persons can utilize the setup developed by the teams to improve the benchmark results, the strategy part should mention which task the participant wants to perform instead of a full fledged strategy.

Team/Participant selection

Teams/Participants are selected by the steering committee of the event. Criteria for the selection include:

• Topic related experience of the overall team.
• Support needs based on preliminary work/experience.
• Soundness of the approach.
• Geographic distribution of the teams.

In case of ambiguities, the steering committee will contact you for clarification in order to ensure that the applicant teams are rated fairly.

The selection process will ensure a high success rate of the different teams in regard to their work.

The application documents have to be provided to the organizer of the event by means to be defined. Please register to the mailing list ftp-ssc@gwdg.de to get updates on the event and associated processes.
